  • 1 block of firm tofu, around 300g
  • Cornflour / cornstarch to coat
  • 2 tbsps light soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • ½ tbsp Chinese cooking wine
  • ½ tbsp vegan oyster sauce, or kecap manis
  • 1-2 tablespoons of freshly ground black pepper
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 3 slices of ginger, finely chopped
  • Handful of chopped spring onions
  • 3 tbsps water

Sizzling black pepper tofu - an insanely flavourful dish that will be sure to have you eating a huge bowl of rice. So easy to make and you can easily adapt this sauce for other proteins of your choice. It's great with slices of steak too!


  1. Press the tofu to drain off any excess water, and slice into thick pieces. Coat generously in cornflour.
  2. Mix the sauces together along with the chopped aromatics.
  3. Head up a frying pan with oil and pan fry the tofu on each side for a few minutes until golden brown.
  4. Once the tofu is golden and crispy, turn down the heat and pour in the sauce. Let this simmer and reduce until almost all the water is evaporated. Flip the tofu around to allow the sauce to coat all over.
  5. Serve immediately with a garnish of chopped spring onions over steamed rice. Enjoy!
